What resources are available through TESOL Canada?

TESOL Canada is a membership organization, an accrediting body that evaluates teachers, students, and institutional members on their TESOL programs or qualifications. In addition to providing TESOL standards across Canada and the the world, TESOL Canada is also a research and development center that updates TESOL curriculums, posts latest developments on TESOL education and e-learning technology, and links schools, students and educators under one international charter. Available resources are combined work of our teachers, members, associates, and other colleagues in the field.

FORMER TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Teachers Advanced Standing Evaluation "TASE" is a process through which TESOL Canada can evaluate, validate and credit your Previous Teaching Experience toward completion of a TESOL Certification Program if you don't already have one, or toward TESOL Canada Certificate of Accreditation if you already have a TESOL Certificate or Diploma. Regardless of having or not having a certificate, TASE can help you.

Applicants whose training was completed at a non-accredited TESOL institution are able to supply their educational documents, former TESOL certification’s outline, and a summary of their former teaching experience. INTERNATIONAL TESOL EDUCATION
University degrees completed outside Canada shall follow a Canadian equivalency process through local Provincial Ministry of Education and in Québec through Equivalence Québec. If you are currently outside Canada during the time of application, you may supply your documents directly to WTEO World TESOL Organization for Equivalency & Evaluations. TESOL Language Proficiency Exam TPLE may also be required.

Because no single body governs all ESL jobs worldwide, no statistics exist for which countries have the most jobs. Please visit TESOL Canada’s Online Jobs & Career page for job listings.

 

12- Can TESOL Canada find a job for me?

TESOL does not offer placement services for teachers or recruitment services for employers. But TESOL Canada Jobs & Career page has many resources available to jobseekers, including an online E-Bulletin, a monthly newswire; and an annual job fair held at the TESOL Canada & TESOL USA joint convention.

 

13- Does TESOL Canada have an office where I live?

The TESOL Canada is located in Toronto, Ontario. TESOL Canada has more than 50 affiliates worldwide, but these affiliates are entirely separate organizations with independent memberships and activities. A list of accredited institutions where courses can be taken is available at Accredited Institutions page and a list of TESOL affiliates is available at International Affiliates page.

 

14- How long does it take to process my membership application?

Usually, it takes 1-2 weeks to process a payment from the time you mail your application to the time TESOL confirms your payment.

16- If I'm a TESOL Canada member, does that make me a member of my local affiliate, too?

No. Nor does membership in an affiliate automatically make someone a member of TESOL Canada. You may join any local organizations separately. However our affiliates respect our network and value your membership & accreditation in other TESOL accrediting organizations.

 

17- Do I have to be certified in TESOL Canada before I can become a member?

You can join TESOL as a TESOL Student or TESOL Graduate (Teacher). Individuals that are not in the field of teaching or are not planning to become teachers may not join TESOL Canada.

 

18- How can an employer verify if I am an accredited TESOL Canada member?

Employers, institutions and other organizations may check our Accredited Teachers Page.

 

19- Are memberships transferable?

No. Memberships are individual based and non-transferable even if your school or company paid for your membership.

 

20- May my institution become a member of TESOL?

Yes, Institutions can become members of TESOL Canada and may do so through Institutions page.  

 

21- My TESOL/TESL/TEFL training is not from a TESOL Canada Recognized Program. How can I become a TESOL Canada member? (TASE Program)

There are solutions. Applicants whose training was completed at a non-accredited TESOL institution are able to supply their educational documents, former TESOL certification’s outline, and a summary of their former teaching experience. They can then apply to “Teachers Advanced Standing Evaluation - TASE”. After a complete evaluation, TESOL Canada Certificate can be provided based on prior Teaching Experience, Practicum Credits, Methodologies, Research & Publication Credits and other TESOL, Undergraduate or Graduate Education. To qualify for certification, any additional courses that might be need will be recommended. Once registered through our application process, TASE cost is Free. Any additional courses if needed will have separate fees.

 

22-If I have a Degree and Teaching Experience with Children can I qualify for TESOL Canada Certification?

Yes. TESOL Canada Diploma Standard TCCT 450 hour Certification program is intended for teaching both to Adults & Children. Adults ESL teaching that includes TAE Teaching Academic English and TBE Teaching Business English is intended in all countries including Canada, while TEC Teaching English to Children certification is intended for overseas respecting each country’s regulations. One may apply to become certified separately in TEC, TAE or TBE; or one may take all of them in a Diploma program.

 

23- I have returned home from teaching EFL overseas & would now like to be certified to teach in Canada. What should I do?

If you have a TESOL certificate from a non-recognized institution, apply to TASE.
If you have no TESOL certificate at all, apply through our Accredited Institutions.
If you have years of Teaching Experience without a certificate, apply to TASE.
With no degree & no certificate, but have teaching experience, apply to TASE.

 

24- My degree was completed in another country. Will it be accepted as a requirement?

University degrees completed outside Canada shall follow a Canadian equivalency process through local Provincial Ministry of Education and in Québec through Equivalence Québec.

 

If access to a local Canadian Ministry of Education Equivalency office or Equivalence Québec is restricted for any reason, or if you are currently outside Canada during the time of application, you may supply your documents directly to WTEO for Equivalency & Evaluations. World TESOL Organization WTEO will provide equivalency and translations in 14 languages.

 

If the language of education was not in English, a TESOL Proficiency Language Exam TPLE will be required.

 

Note that IELTS or TOEFL results cannot replace TPLE as these exams are for language learners’ evaluations and not tailored for teachers’ assessments.

 

 

25- Can I complete my teaching experience & practicum online?

Yes, there is possibility of completing teaching experience online through TESOL Canada e-learning portal. Various online teaching & learning portals will be provided upon enrollment.

 

26- Does my TESOL education count as K-12 classroom or other public school systems?

No. TESOL education is not meant for public schools under the category of Ministry of Education or School Board systems. TESOL is to teach to adults more than 18 years of age and not for youth in Canada. Although in some other countries TESOL teachers may be teaching to youth as well as adults.

 

27- Can I be certified with TESOL Canada if I have completed CELTA?

Yes, please apply to TASE “Teachers Advanced Standing Evaluation” program.

 

28- What are different Standards offered at TESOL Canada?

29- I hold Master’s degree in Education/ TESOL or English. Could I be TESOL Canada certified?

Yes, You may apply to Postgraduate Diploma Standard Certification as well as TASE program.

 

30- If TESL Ontario certified could I also become TESOL Canada certified?

Currently there is no affiliation between TESL Ontario and TESOL Canada. However, their standards are well respected and hence one can apply to TASE program for TESOL Canada recognition.

 

31- What are the differences between membership & accredited certification?

To receive an accredited certification, one needs to become a member first. Once member, person may apply for TESOL accreditation of a completed standard. Almost all members are also accredited & certified through TESOL Canada. However accreditation is not an obligatory but a voluntary step.

 

32- For a lost certificate, can I be issued a new one?

Yes, if your initial certificate was issued through TESOL Canada or one of its accredited schools, we normally keep your records for five years. In such a case certificate re-issuance may be possible through our general application process.

 

33- If a certificate was issued from an unlisted institute among your institutions, can I still get a new one?

No, we have no records of other schools’ students if they are not members of TESOL Canada.

 

34- how can I apply to one of your recognized institutions?

A list of accredited institutions with their website link is available. Applicants may also apply through TESOL Canada Registration Hub directed toward their selected school & program.

 

35- What are differences of TESOL Canada in compare to other TESL organizations?

In Canada, TESOL Canada concentrates more on Private Language Industry such as Language Schools, Private Community Colleges or Private Vocational Colleges as opposed to Public Education System such as Canadian Universities or Immigration Schools. (LINC. etc)

 

On International Scale, in addition to representing private sector, TESOL Canada also represents various public colleges and universities in Asia, Middle East and Europe.

 

Internationally TESOL Canada is affiliated with more than 50 TESOL organizations and schools providing accreditations and recognitions to its TESOL graduates and deployment to teach abroad.

 

TESOL Canada provides Teachers Training programs not only in English but also in 12 other languages including Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Italian, German, Russian, Turkish, Portuguese & Persian.

 

TESOL Canada provides TESOL for adults, but it also provides TEC Teaching English to Children, TAE Teaching Academic English & TBE Teaching Business English in all countries.

 

TESOL Canada standards go through a wider spectrum by covering a minimum 150-hour program up to 650-hour program, from Certificate to Diploma and to Postgraduate Diploma.

 

TESOL Canada does not necessarily need a bachelor degree. If an applicant can provide sufficient college studies along with teaching experience can go through a TASE program. Once fully evaluated an applicant can join TESOL Canada Certification process. Almost 89 % of our members have some sort of degree, masters or even PhD in the field, but is no a requirement to join TESOL Canada.

 

All members are subject to TESOL Language Proficiency Exam TLPE at the start and must pass through TESOL Canada International Board Exam to qualify for accreditation certificate.

 

TESOL Canada Scholarship is also an added bonus available to all applicants willing to join our partner schools programs.

TEACHERS STUDY PLANS

Once Teachers Former Education and Teaching Experience is evaluated through "TASE" Teachers Advanced Standing Evaluation, to become TESOL Canada Certified & Accredited, one of the options below may be studied at a TESOL Canada Approved College Online or In-Class.

TESOL Advanced Standard Certificate
TESOL Advanced Standard Certificate includes 300 hours of Theory & Practice. Theory is tailored for Adults, TBE Teaching Business English and TAE Teaching Academic English. This program provides employment opportunities both in Canada & Overseas. This program is available for applicants with or without a degree. Teachers with Former Teaching Experience may be granted Experience Credits. Teachers with former Academic Education in TESOL or ESL Teaching in general may be granted partial Theory Courses Credits. Maximum credits allowed is 50 % of the course.

TESOL Diploma Standard- “TESOL Canada Certified Trainer” TCCT program includes 450 hours of Theory & Practice. Theory is tailored for Adults, TBE Teaching Business English and TAE Teaching Academic English as well as TEC Teaching English to Children. This program provides employment opportunities as ESL instructor or TESOL Trainer with TCCT both in Canada & Overseas. Program requires a degree to join.
